A stray cat had 3 kittens in our garage and we didn't even know it. My boyfriend, djakrse, heard them when he was pulling some siding off the garage and he thought it was a bird. Anyhow, the kittens started playing out in the yard with their mom. djakrse was able to successfully feed the kittens dry food, so we knew they were definitely old enough to be away from their mom. We planned to catch and socialize them. It wasn't as easy as we'd hoped. Along with problems with the Live Trap we were using, we also ended up with a second litter from across the street.
Once we started putting food outside, the cat that had a litter across the street moved her babies to live under our house. The momma cat was the sweetest thing in the world and most of the time seemed to think she belonged to us. Her original owners had a house fire and they moved out without taking her with them. She is the greatest little mom. She came over all the time and caught lizards and things and took them back to her babies, but apparently she decided they needed to belong to us, too. So... since we had this handy dandy trap and we figured out how we are supposed to be setting it for light animals (yes... you can apparently set it differently for something lightweight to trip it), we used it to get her babies inside. The momma... she came in and out of our house as she pleased already. They were the cutest little family. The babies started to trust us so fast, because their momma did.
The original litter of kittens, however, things didn't go as well. We did catch one of the kittens, one of the white with black spots kittens. She was the most timid of the litter, and was scared to death, but did eat a bowl of food which was a great sign!! As for her siblings and mama, we never did catch them.
The very timid kitty from the first litter we spotted we are keeping forever. I don't think she would trust anyone else. We named her Mollie. The little boy kitties from the second litter are sooo great to her. She just cries her little heart out if we take them out of the room.
I'm happy to report, though, that Mollie has come a long way and even seems to really love us. She'll come up to us for treats and she'll lick and bite on our hands. I've even been able to pet her once.
Congratulations Mollie!!!
